A Different View

It’s a Long Way Down

Standing on my skis, my hands gripping the ski poles, leaning slightly forward and looking down the slope, I ask myself, how did I get here?  As far as I know, nobody asks to be born.  We are just suddenly here, facing a downhill adventure that ends the same for everyone.  We are but a crumpled heap lying at the bottom, carted away by someone who thought it was a good idea to be an undertaker.  Odd choice.

But this post isn’t about strange professions or expensive ski equipment, and it isn’t even about being born into this world.  It is about sitting by the fireplace inside the ski lodge, feeling the warmth and sipping hot chocolate.  That, my friend, is the best part of skiing.

That is the part of being born that nobody talks about.  Once it is over and we’re relaxing in the afterlife, surrounded by friends, feeling the warmth, remembering the taste and feel of the hot chocolate.  That is the enjoyable part.  Viewing the slope from a different vantage point.  Once the adventure has ended and the chairlift takes us to Heaven, all fear and anticipation is gone.  That will be the very first time you get to know what relaxed truly means.

These Near-Death Experiences that people talk about are nothing more than a lack of snow.
