45 RPM

Not sure if I would have slowed down or not.  At the time I didn’t realize I was driving away from the 60’s.   What pocket change I did have was enough to fill the gas tank, and the only thing in front of me was adventure.

Now that I’m here, looking into the rearview mirror I can see just how fast I was going.  What was new and exciting has turned into a blur.  Little did I know the construction sites I was passing were the building blocks of memories.

The hills and valleys seemed much steeper at the time.  In fact, everything had an importance to it that in hindsight made no difference to anything.  Only the music of the day remained with me through time and travel. and I can still hear it, even though now I'm at 33 1/3.

It all depends

I noticed in England they call an elevator, a lift.  This makes no reference to the decent at all, as if rising is all it does.  Hardly accurate nomenclature.

Up on that ridge.

However, should you already be there, wouldn’t it be – here, on this cliff?

Things change, depending upon where you are.

It was in the final 2 seconds yesterday when a team lost the game.  A simple mistake that will live with the players forever.  A bad decision, a wrong move and it was all over.

However, those wearing the other team’s colors found great joy and relief in those last seconds.  They will relive that moment in their minds.  They will talk about it throughout history as a bright spot worthy of celebration.

Years from now, that photograph will mean different things to different people.  One might see it as a cliff, while another sees it as a ridge.  The same picture can both elevate as well as send that sinking feeling into the pit of your stomach.

It's a little beyond over there

Mysterious forces are the primary cause of shoes coming untied.  Not, of course, to be confused with the force used by Luke Skywalker or Yoda.  That’s something altogether different.

OK, while writing this I made a very serious discovery.  I am magnetic.  I apparently attract clutter.  I am a clutter magnet.  This room wasn’t like this until I got here.

I don’t think you’re taking this seriously.  I mean it, look around.  I am surrounded.  Everything has moved in closer to me.  I’m lucky my elbows have the amount of space they have.  I need a stuff exorcist.

When throwing stuff away, I have to ask myself, where is away?  It must be a place, but where is it on the map?

“Oh, the Parkers… they moved away.”

Yes, but where did they go?  Can you show me?

“Well… I’m not really sure.  I just know they’re not around here anymore.”

Good, that’s where I want all of this stuff to go.  Someplace not around here.

“Some things you just can’t get rid of.  Not sure why.  They seem to have some sort of force.”

Don’t tell me that.

Butterscotch

There are no reeds or water Lillys.  Instead, my pelican swims with staplers, pens and tape dispensers.  And rather than fish, all slimy and stinky, Walter offers me Werther’s as a taste treat.  I should also mention that Walter is extremely gentle.  He makes sure my fingers are out of the way before he snaps his mouth closed.

Stay away from Denmark

I wonder, could there be a day filled with nothing but wonderful aromas?  No sights, or sounds, no GPS indicating in which direction to travel.  Only guided by the scent before you.  Waking up in the morning to the aroma of fresh baked cookies.  The more you walk towards it, the stronger the smell becomes.

But wait, that slight breeze you just walked through holds the heavy scent of meatloaf.  Yum, that reminds you of a Friday after school, when your mother fixed her favorite recipe in that heavy pan.  Now you’re picking up a hint of mashed potatoes.  You hadn’t realized it before but now you’re getting hungry. And there's that note of melting butter.

Your eyes are still closed as you step into a very familiar aroma.  What is that?  It isn't food.  It is very pleasant and reminds you of something, but what?  Is it that girl’s perfume?  The one that sat next to you during the school assembly?  I remember her. The smell and the memory makes you smile.

I just wanted to take a moment and explore this idea.  Not really sure where I was headed with it, and maybe I stopped following it because it stinks.  Who knows?

Oops - excuse me.

Pull up the line and discard the bait.  Wash the boat down and head home.  Another day passed while I sat and stared at the surface of the water.  None of the breeze snagged any of my thoughts.  They were all still with me as I tucked the boat in for the night.  So, am I to face a new tomorrow with yesterday’s thoughts still hanging around?  That doesn’t seem right.  A new day deserves new thinking.

I wonder what the fish were thinking as they looked up through the water at me sitting there.  I doubt I’ll carry that thought into tomorrow.  I wonder what causes thinking, and can it be controlled?  A good example of this is this very post.  You see, not only do I not fish, I have never sat out in a boat and stared at the surface of the water.  So, what caused all of that to spring into my head?

The more I think about it, probably 99% of Blogland here has been manufactured by yours truly.  Stray and random thoughts, left to wander around on these pages.  No leash, no invisible fence, nothing.  Then again, maybe it is my ability to picture myself out there in that boat, the sun heating my skin, the hard surface of the seat causing even more discomfort and we can’t forget the fishing line.  Always a potential of great things coming to the surface.  (Not necessarily this post)

But all this outdoors stuff got me to thinking about those big sporting good stores.  The last one I was in had a large section dedicated to duck blinds.  I had no idea they were so opposed to curtains.  OK, I won’t carry that thought into tomorrow either.   I think I’ll take myself over to that chair and pretend I am an Etch-A-Sketch.  I’ll shake my head and erase all of these moronic thoughts.  They will slide down the back of my throat and most likely come out sounding like a poorly spelled belch.

The Misdirection of Guy Smiling

Out, just past the guard rails, live the ones who cast aspirations on their opponents, as opposed to providing their credentials and abilities to perform the job in question.  “If I can get you to look over there, then you won’t focus on me.”

As sad and unfortunate as this is, it has become the accepted norm of political campaigns.
