Both the dentist and the dental
hygienist had left the room. I sat there
staring at the ceiling, straining to hear what they were discussing in the
hallway. Was it something she had seen
in my mouth that frightened her. I saw
her give a slight shiver and say, “Oh my.” Then they both scooted out of the
room.
This was a bad time to let my
imagination run wild, but what did she see?
I tried hard to focus on something else.
The dead bugs in the overhead light, or the water stain on the ceiling
tile in the corner. Then again, by
keeping my mouth open this long, my jaw was beginning to ache. No, throb. What could they possibly be talking about?
When they walked back in, neither
was saying anything or looking me in the eye.
Then, finally the technician said she was going to take a couple
additional x-rays. Did they want more
pictures or were they just shooting more rays at whatever was inside my mouth.
My tongue couldn’t have been more
dry and my jaw was hurting like crazy. I
was thinking at this point it was rather rude of the dentist not to tell me
what was going on. I squirmed a little
in the chair and she quickly looked at me and said, “You probably shouldn’t do
that. Not now.”
