In the Beginning

There may have been a mean streak in our creator.
He gave us the ability to walk on two feet,
then mocked us by placing birds beside us—
creatures who not only walk on two feet
but soar effortlessly through the air.

He gave us humor,
that we might see the fun side of life,
then added politicians,
so we’d never forget what greed and corruption look like.

He granted us knowledge and understanding,
so we could recognize that our lives have a time limit—
then burdened us with disease and pain.

He keeps the reason for it all hidden behind his back,
like a magician who refuses to reveal
where the rabbit came from.

He ensured that everything we build wears out,
so others can sell us extended warranties.

He gave us memory,
so we could relive our happiest moments,
then made sure nostalgia hurts just enough
to remind us those times are gone.

He gave us love,
but only by making loss its inevitable twin.

He gave us curiosity,
then placed the answers just beyond our reach—
in the stars, in the atom.

If this was all part of a divine plan,
it seems the punchline is still coming.
And we, loyal audience that we are,
keep laughing—
just in case…

You're Going to want to Rinse

Both the dentist and the dental hygienist had left the room.  I sat there staring at the ceiling, straining to hear what they were discussing in the hallway.  Was it something she had seen in my mouth that frightened her.  I saw her give a slight shiver and say, “Oh my.” Then they both scooted out of the room.

This was a bad time to let my imagination run wild, but what did she see?  I tried hard to focus on something else.  The dead bugs in the overhead light, or the water stain on the ceiling tile in the corner.  Then again, by keeping my mouth open this long, my jaw was beginning to ache. No, throb.  What could they possibly be talking about?

When they walked back in, neither was saying anything or looking me in the eye.  Then, finally the technician said she was going to take a couple additional x-rays.  Did they want more pictures or were they just shooting more rays at whatever was inside my mouth.

My tongue couldn’t have been more dry and my jaw was hurting like crazy.  I was thinking at this point it was rather rude of the dentist not to tell me what was going on.  I squirmed a little in the chair and she quickly looked at me and said, “You probably shouldn’t do that.  Not now.”

A Sound Investment

I usually enjoy a bowl of Rice Krispies for breakfast.  Not too long ago I noticed we had purchased an off brand.  They looked the same as Rice Krispies but were much cheaper than the Kellogg’s brand.

The taste was so close to the real thing that I couldn’t really complain, but the snap, crackle and pop was missing.  The lessor brand was able to duplicate the taste but failed when it came to sound effects.

I don’t know why but my breakfast just wasn’t the same.  I missed listening to the background music while I ate.  To me, it was worth the extra few cents to get the real thing.

Brand-X needed to spend more time in the lab to get it right, but then maybe if they had, their price might have gone just as high as the name brand.  O-well.  This wasn't really Blog worthy, I just thought I'd mention it.  Now close this out before the boss walks by again and sees you goofing off.

Think Bigger

When you think just how incredibly tiny we are compared to the entire universe it is a wonder we are able to function, build cities and send rockets off into space.  Gravity, much like fly paper, keeps us stuck to this whirling planet.  Insects, much smaller than us have no difficulty springing up from the ground and flying around as if completely unaffected by such a force.  Maybe fly paper was the wrong choice for a comparison, as gravity isn’t sticky, although it can be dangerous.  The further off of the ground we become, the more dangerous gravity gets.

Mountain climbers are given only a couple chances to get it right.  Too many goofs and down they go.  Perhaps we should be viewing this planet as a living creature.  All of its systems work in harmony keeping it alive.  It relies on the air and seas and the expansion and contractions of its land masses.  Maybe it has a conscience.  Possibly what we see as an annoyance is simply its way of keeping us safe. Could it be that we are living on a thinking planet?

It just might be that we’ve been thinking too small all these years.  In viewing all of the planets of the solar system as living beings that exist within a much larger body, then it makes sense.  We are simply the tiny cancers infecting the host, polluting the rivers with poisons, destroying the air with O-factories and such.  Ignore that play on words there, I was just having fun.

Anyway – think bigger.
