There has always been an invisible fence between hourly workers and Management. To some, it is an impossible barrier, never to be crossed. While others see it as a goal, a challenge to strive for.
At parties, or meeting new people the conversation always brings up which side of the fence you’re on.
“What do you do for a living?”
Suddenly we can mentally place where they fit in. Are they THEM or are they US? Now we feel more comfortable.
The fence between working and retired tends to remove the us and them aspect. Nobody cares what you did for a living, or how high up the ladder you climbed. All of that disappeared with your last paycheck.
Now it is, “Where are you from?” Are you a surfer dude from California, or a Northerner claiming to have won the civil war? Maybe a Southerner who enjoys good home-cooking and sweet tea.
We can’t seem to help ourselves, that is still a fence. We are still mentally placing you into a slot, so now we feel more comfortable. Apparently, that is just how we are.
In the not so distant future we will find ourselves comparing robots. “Mine is the latest from Domestic Tranquility, Inc. It controls the entire household, automatically shops and does the cooking. It programs our television viewing and schedules our doctor’s appointments and does all of Suzie’s homework assignments.”
“I caught mine sneaking money out of my purse. It didn’t think I noticed. I’m not sure what to do, I don’t want to make it mad.”
“Ours says it doesn’t smoke, but I can smell it.”
“There’s always military
school.”
"Really?"
