The Devil's shortcut

The distance between a sleeve and a pant leg can be a lifetime, depending upon who is doing the tugging.  Years ago, my grandson would tug on my sleeve whenever he wanted me to follow him or go someplace.  Now, years later, I’ve noticed it is death tugging on my pant cuff, pulling at me to join him down below.

“I don’t really care to play right now, thank you anyway.”

Death, however, doesn’t like waiting and can, at any time, leave a grandson’s toy in plain sight, then with slight-of-hand, flicker the sunlight through the window, or cause an impatient crow to holler at an empty water dish, getting my attention as I cross the room.

In an odd and disturbing way, that’s considered fair play.  Life, like the latest technology, doesn’t come with a user’s manual.  The learn by doing method has become the accepted practice.   Unfortunately, that can shorten our time on the playing field considerably.
