Listen, and you'll hear it.

They are the sounds of stopping.  An airplane landing on the runway sends a loud screeching of tires into the quiet surroundings.  A locomotive reaching the station drags metal against metal piercing eardrums and shaking windows.  The early-morning coffee maker spits and sputters to a steamy end, and yet the quiet ending of this paragraph speaks volumes of deflated anticipation.
