Probably out on the playground

I was curious to know what an atom looks like, so I typed it into Google and this is the picture that came up.  I'm assuming that just one of these red dots is an atom, but then again, maybe this entire thing is an atom.  I've no clue.

I have heard of them splitting an atom, but how do they isolate one and what holds it while some microscopic knife slices through it?

Does one person hold a chisel while someone else swings a tiny little hammer?

I think it's best if I don't wander into any of the roped-off areas of my brain.  But while I'm here...  Why on Earth would someone want to split an atom to begin with?  I can understand splitting a peach open.  That's the only way to get at the pit and plant it so you can get more peaches.

And one more thing.  If everything is made up of atoms, then is a wood atom different than a steel atom?  And if that's the case, just how many different kinds of atoms are there?

Where was I when they were teaching this stuff in school?

Okay, one last thing before I go.

Two atoms were walking down the street.

One of the atoms says, "Oops, I think I lost an electron."

The other atom says, "Are you sure?"

The first atom says, "Yes, I'm positive."

See?  Those areas are roped off for a reason.
