The River

I’ve been on the far side of the river.  I know what it is to swim across, to fight the rapids and to feel the current pull at my legs.  I have felt the strength leave my arms half-way, while the river carried me along, mostly submerged.  The shoreline never bothering to reach out.

Although it failed to take me, its memory flows through me.  It has become a part of my landscape, if only to illuminate my limitations.  It is not an achievement or source of pride, but simply a notch on the belt of my opponent.
