The shadow of the hawk rose up
the stand of trees. Logic told me it was
flying overhead and just behind me. The
shadow was the only thing alerting the small critters on the ground of its
presents.
It was one of Mother Nature’s
tells, keeping a balance in the grand scheme.
She had given the hawk the silence of flight, with sharp claws and keen
sight, it was only fair to the life below to broadcast its arrival.
Beyond the trees stretched open
fields. Occasional ground squirrels,
rabbits and snakes sometimes struggled to find cover. Spiders built their homes along the rocks and
were oblivious to the adventure being played around them.
I was much too large and not an
option for the circling hawk. My only
concern was how my boots would be against a strike from a rattler, so I chose
my steps carefully, unconcerned with any activity overhead.
