How it Ends

I remember the time gravity stopped working.  I was sitting here, writing something, I don’t really remember what but everything on my desk started floating to the ceiling.  My keyboard, the stapler and all of my pens.  It really was quite odd.  Then, when I looked outside, I saw the dog walker and her dog lifting off the ground.  She started screaming but the dog was just looking around, still wagging its tail.  The palm frons were no longer drooping.  They were all pointing straight up, like some teenager trying to be different with spiked hair pointing straight up.

It was all rather interesting until I felt myself suddenly lighter and although I was still sitting in my chair, we both were floating off the floor.  All the little hard candies in my candy dish were now stuck to the ceiling, along with the dish.  I wondered how long this was going to last.  I wondered about all of those people in other countries fighting a war.  Their bullets and bombs would all just fly off into space.  All the poker chips in Vegas would float off the table, along with everyone’s money.  What a hoot.  Life  would forever be different, that's for sure.

And I know it’s not just happening in here, because the last car that drove down our street, slowed down to look at the wild turkeys and then the car and the turkeys floated up into the air.  I can still see them going up and up.  I wonder if our houses will take off.  They weren’t designed to hold on, not like the trees, and now this chair pushing against me is getting uncomfortable.  I hope the carpet doesn’t float up and cover me.  Although my view out of the window is now from the top of the window, I can see, what appears to be all of the various bugs and things that were in the lawn, they are all flying up into the air and so is my neighbor’s trashcan.

Could this be how it all ends, not with some nuclear war between countries but just gravity switching off?  What a unique ending.  Too bad I didn’t think of this before, I could have written a story about it.
