Once Upon A Time

Two young boys walked up to a very large Oak tree and the first thing they noticed were two frogs sitting at the base of the tree.  The frogs were knee deep in a conversation about Neil deGrasse Tyson’s book, Astrophysics for people in a hurry.  So engrossed were they that neither noticed the two boys.

One of the boys looked up.  His friend said, “What are you doing? You’re not going to see a frog nest.  Frogs don’t live in trees.”

It was odd, of course, that neither boy had noticed that it was Monday and yet both frogs were dressed as if it were casual Friday.

Much later and unrelated to the above story, two adults who happened upon a very large Oak tree thought they heard voices as they passed the tree.  They stopped and looked around.  Only then did they notice two frogs at the base of the tree.

The frogs stopped talking and one of them looked up at the person on the left.  “Weren’t you here several years ago.  I seem to remember you were a young boy and had this same friend with you.”

Of course, the man was startled at the frog’s recollection.  “Yes, that was us, but how on earth did you remember that?”

Some years beyond all that, long after the large Oak tree had been chopped down to make way for a new sub-division, a very old man was walking his dog.  The dog was on a leash and sniffing at everything he passed.

The dog felt he needed to tug harder on the leash to hurry the old man along.  He loved being outside and wanted to walk and walk and walk, even though he knew the old man was soon to tire and head back home.

Suddenly the dog stopped.  He was no longer pulling on the leash, in fact, he wasn’t budging.  He had obviously discovered something there by the bush that was new to him.  He had never smelled anything like that before.

The old man wasn’t sure what his dog had discovered so he cautiously walked over and bent down to have a look.

“You silly mutt, that’s just a frog nest.”

Not having yet had my morning coffee
I take no responsibility for this post.
I woke up thinking I'd write something about
the changing face of our surroundings,
about the things that go unnoticed and of the
various behaviors during the different stages
of life.
As I sat here, however, I began asking myself -
How on earth will I write about things
that have gone unnoticed?
