The entire time you were growing up, learning to walk,
discovering what food tastes like, attending school, sitting at job interviews,
planning vacations, yelling at the kids, planning for retirement, fixing the
flat tire and letting the dog or cat go out or come in, the clock has been
ticking.
Most of the time we don’t even hear it. It blends in with all the other noises in
life. The only difference is, most of
those other noises change or stop. Not
the clock.
It was ticking at the beginning of the Bible and was still
ticking throughout the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons. It didn’t even stop when Luke was learning to
use the force. You just may not have
heard it, but it was there.
Between the time Clint Eastwood was asking if we felt lucky,
and when Billy Crystal said, “Have fun storming the castle” it kept ticking. An artist can drape it in light and shadow,
and a skilled writer can pump it full of suspense, but neither can slow it down.
It is our destiny to be the grains of sand being relentlessly
pounded by the tide. Once we accept that,
it becomes easier to relax. Enjoy being
tickled by the seagull toes and playing with the clam bubbles popping up around
us. Sure, there will be some days it
really stinks, but those days will pass.
