The person placing the red dot on the map that says “You Are Here” assumes a lot. They assume:
-
They know where you are,
-
They know who you are,
-
And perhaps most importantly, they believe they know where “here” is.
But how do they know?
Maybe they don’t.
Maybe “here” is just their best guess based on a bird’s-eye view—an abstraction of a living world boiled down to symbols, lines, and parking lots.
Maybe “you” passed by hours ago. Maybe you’re still in your car. Maybe you’re lost three blocks away, looking at the wrong map entirely.
Or maybe they mean something more philosophical.
Maybe “You Are Here” is less about location and more about attention—a red dot trying to snap you into presence. A reminder: Wherever you go, there you are.
But in truth?
They probably don’t know.
They just hope the red dot helps.
And if you're me, good luck finding that map to begin with.

Sence of direction is genetic and we didn't get that Gean! I get lost walking out of an elevator!
