Swimming out beyond the markers

I have seen advertisers say that hair has volume, yet I’ve never heard it, even at a whisper.  Although when I consider bicycle locks, I envision a secure method of thief prevention, while a lock of your hair can steal my heart.  I’m so confused.  I have consulted the back of my cookbook to see what the equivalent of a smattering is. There are no lines on my measuring cup that indicate a smattering or a smidge.

Our language seems to be a stage prop, appropriate for one play and an obstruction during another.  It is up to the lighting guy to move the spotlight over the right thing at the right time, preventing our actors from becoming tongue tied.  I can’t even picture what that might look like.

English is a tough language to learn. I am still trying to figure out the old words with now a new meaning.
