The back row consists of tall
people, the back-up singers and items seldom dusted, possibly no longer in
date.
Along the supermarket shelves it
is a fight for position. Up front and facing forward, that’s the desired place
to be. Not necessarily on sale, but
almost always a high profit item. Good for the market, bad for you.
The back row also stands the king
and queen, the castles and the knights, while disposable troops line the front
lines of the battlefield.
The Pawns in the supermarket are
never reading the labels or paying attention to price. Attracted by glitter and flashy colors, they
fill their baskets with sugar, chemicals, gimmicks and remembered jingles.
Marketing focuses on appearance,
while the true battle festers within the teenager packing the bags at
checkout. So many thoughts unrelated to
products, condition and service.
Believing he is a knight, standing at the ready, anxious to guard his
queen. Seeing himself in the back row,
never once seeing himself as a pawn.
Annoyed at the request for a price check, ignoring the announcement for
a clean-up on aisle four, his thoughts drift to the upcoming weekend, as he
plops the carton of milk onto the loaf of marble rye.

Very Clever! In Austrailia the cashier hands the receipt to the guest and says: "Here's your Check Mate!"
