The Letter

Long ago and oh-so far away, there was a letter.  It was young and playful and didn’t really know much about the world she lived in.  In fact, even though she was surrounded by 25 other letters, not one of them was like she was. But all that seemed normal.  Everybody was different.  That’s just the way things were. What she was discovering, however, was that not everyone played nicely together.

Someone would yell, “OK, everybody line up.”  And everyone would scramble to form a sentence.  Many times she would fit right in, but last Wednesday, she discovered she had a twin sister.  There they all were, standing shoulder to shoulder and…  well it came as quite a shock.  It was a simple sentence about some child blowing bubbles, and suddenly there she was.  Another b.  It was like looking in a mirror.

Of course, she had heard of such things but never did she think it could happen to her.  It actually made her feel a little less conspicuous.  And the more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea.  She was actually getting excited about having a twin sister.  As they talked and began to learn about each other, b discovered her father was a capital.  He was important, he’d been somebody.  All very brave, standing at the head of sentences, his chest all puffed out, like some puffer fish or something.  When she closed her eyes, she could envision him standing at the beginning of a sentence or paragraph, all proud as could B.

The more the two b’s talked and learned about each other, the more they would giggle and come up with silly plans, like playing hide and seek in some paragraph, the size of a city block.  They tried to come up with words they could disappear into, although seldom were they silent.

“I could disappear into a bonnet”, one said.

“I don’t think so”, replied her sister.  You would have to bring those pesky e twins along. and for sure they'd wouldn't stay quiet."

And so went the story of the letter b, who one day discovered she wasn’t alone in this world and together with her sister went on to build a wonderful life together.

I'm glad that they found each other and got along. It's so much harder when you are a K and have to be silent almost all the time like his brothers in the word Knife!
