At Rest and in Motion

There was a man just sitting on his lawn chair watching his lawn sprinkler go back and forth.  His face had a smile of contentment that seemed just a little much for the activity of a lawn sprinkler to be causing it.  Something in his life must have gone terribly right.  I can’t ever remember feeling that content or happy about anything.  It was truly noticeable.   I wanted to walk up and ask him, but I thought better of it.

Whatever his storm was, it had passed.  He couldn’t have been any more in the moment than he was.  The metronome movement of the sprinkler was never faulting.  It was the perfect sound and motion, the exact backdrop for his moment at this time.

I’ll never know what caused his delight, maybe a winning lotto ticket, maybe he was just informed he was in remission, I’ll never know.  I don’t want to know.  I just like thinking about and reliving his contentment.  It isn’t something I see all that often.  I doubt that even my camera could have captured it.
