For the most part, we feel safe that suddenly gravity won’t
shut off and everything on the planet will go floating up into space. We feel sort of secure that the old men with
their armies won’t blow us all up. We
like to think that the animal kingdom isn’t going to rise up against us. I’m fairly certain the ants would win.
I feel good knowing that when I turn the handle on the faucet
water will come out, and the switch on the wall will light up the room at
night. I like not having to constantly
think about these things.
I tell myself that back in the kitchen of the restaurant someone
is washing the lettuce, and everyone has washed their hands. I would prefer to
not envision some giant asteroid, silently hurling through space at Earth, just
as I believe that some day I’ll understand the reason for it all.
Making sense of everything, to me, seems like the final frontier. I’m just saying…
