Sitting quietly on a wooden chair,
in a dark room, just listening to the sounds around me. Occasionally I hear a vehicle pass by. In the distance I can hear the freeway
noise. When I tune that out, I can hear
what sounds like hundreds of insects. After
a while, I assume the sun is coming up for the day because the house creaks as
it warms up.
I try to keep listening, but
thoughts of all the things I need to do today keep popping into my head, the
first being – get a cushion for this chair. Bits of yesterday’s conversations float by,
reminding me of tasks yet accomplished.
I’m not sure how people who meditate do it. Keep their head clear, shut-off the internal
chatter long enough to…
To what, focus on
nothingness? I don’t get it. Maybe I don’t really know what meditation
is. It’s obvious the insect world doesn’t
either.

I have never been able to clear my mind - especially at night when trying to go to sleep!
