I am always amazed at how very
silent snow is. Winter, of course, can
be blustery and loud, but the snow itself is mute. It is a blanket of quiet laying across a chaotic
and loud world. Stepping outside after it
has snowed is like stepping into a sound-proof booth. It wraps you up on all sides, almost
insulating you from the cold.
A friend of mine has great
troubling hearing. That problem carries
with it daily issues the rest of us never have to think about. If we walk away from the sink and happen to
leave the faucet dripping, we notice it.
He does not. Should someone be
knocking on the front door, or rings the doorbell, it goes unheard. At a gathering, with everyone sitting around
talking, he only gets to see the animated behavior and can’t join in the
conversation. When he does join in, he’s
never sure if he is talking too loud or not loud enough.
For him, it must be like it is
always winter, but without the option of sound – only vibrate.

I think you are so right! We hearing folk often don't give thanks for all the blessings we have and take for granted.
