Chill

See for yourself

I believe we need to adjust the standard deviation.  According to my information and observations, Noah brought two of everything with him, and yet what I see happening today is that we are dying three at a time. Whenever you hear of some famous person passing away, there are always two to follow.  Not sure why that is, but unless we adjust things, our final numbers are going to be off.

Cold Case

When given a choice between two, the choice should be one and a half, as that lives dead center.

The issue I’ve always had with story problems is the story itself.  Written my math professionals rather than literary people tends to lack the spark of clever, or the motivation of intrigue.  I’ve never cared which train arrived first, or how many apples Julie had left.  The way I saw it, with her braces, she shouldn’t be eating apples anyway.

My way of thinking is to teach math using real-life examples.  I can’t tell you how many cashiers I have encountered that cannot count back the correct change.  And ask the guy at the deli counter to give you 1/3 pound and he’s flummoxed.

Here is your stack of household bills for the past month.  Figure out how much to pay each one and how much you’ll have left.  Now, how much interest is each one charging you on your unpaid balance?  Which one is the most expensive?  Which bank account pays you the most for the use of your money.

Education for real life.  Ignore speeding trains, just check the schedule and call to see if they are on time.  Problem solved.

Just wander outside of the classroom and see what needs fixing.  Then fix it.

Wouldn't it be nice

Just think, if books were like this, every page a different story, a different idea or road heading who knows where?  How fun would that be?  Open it up anywhere and just read whatever was there.  No long continuous boring story about, I don't know, I've lost interest.  No need for a bookmark, for it wouldn’t be just blah, blah, blah.  Each page is a separate adventure.  Maybe some rich publisher will read this idea and turn this Blog into a book.

Hey, I’d buy it, and I already know how it ends.

Thoughts of Steel

I hope to someday construct a single, free-standing thought, strong enough to support an idea from the conception of a story, all the way through to its conclusion.  It should be able to withstand any plot twists that may occur while adding support to any suspension of disbelief.

Meanwhile

I am always surprised when I sit down to write but nothing comes to me.  As vast and complex as this universe is, and as crowded as our planet has become, you’d think I’d never run out of gibberish, and yet – here I sit, writing about the fact that nothing springs to mind.

Maybe while we are waiting for me to get an inspiration, I'll share a riddle with you.  There is this young girl, working in a candy store.   Her name is Roberta.  She has dark hair that always has a blue ribbon in it.  She is five feet, six inches tall and has two brothers, both are on the high school wrestling team.  She is very pretty and friendly to all of the customers.  What do you suppose she weighs?

Try to figure it out, don’t just scroll to the end looking for the answer.  If you have already figured it out, then you are probably way too advanced for the level of my gibberish.  You may want to move on to a more sophisticated periodical, perhaps The Onion, or The Upstart Crow.  I do believe, however, that I am a couple rungs above The San Diego Reader.

I would avoid anything associated with newspapers or journalism, as the amount of tarnish on their reputation is beyond restoration.  OK, fine, I have procrastinated long enough.  Of course, the girl working in the candy store spends most of her time weighing candy.  Now see… wasn’t that worth waiting for?  PS, making reference to The Upstart Crow being a periodical was a diversionary tactic, designed to slow you down.
