He kept a radish in his shirt pocket and had a flagpole for
an antenna on his car. He was never one
to conform. In school, he only came
inside for the fire drills. He’d only
use a number 3 pencil and would return everything to the library except books.
To the senior prom he took Wanda Harper. She had stopped him in the hall one day and
asked if he happened to have a radish she could borrow. They’ve been together ever since.
The story of Lyle and Wanda is not unique. They are simply two people passing through
this life that happen to have a Band-aid collection. They spend a great deal of time sitting on
the roof of their house, just looking out over the city. They are not totally convinced the earth is
round and will only listen to television through headphones.
Although they have become difficult to find, their favorite
meal is still Swanson TV dinner. Over
the years they have kept the empty Swanson foil trays their dinners came in,
and they use them for their everyday dishes.
They do not break and are completely stackable.
They have never joined the cell phone craze and still write
all of their appointments on the wall calendar which hangs in the kitchen. Should you ever meet them, you’ll see they
are good people, although they believe whole-heartedly that Andy and Barney
still hold things together in Mayberry.
