It wasn’t so much a deformity as it was simply a mistake by
Nature. Skippy was born with a nose that
was off-center. It wasn’t even close to
where it should be. Should anything
ever happen to his vision, special reading glasses would have to be made to fit
his face. Nothing standard would ever
work for Skippy.
His parents knew he would have a tough life. People would forever be staring at him, kids
would be cruel and call him names, but what could they do? He was the way he was and that was that.
When October rolled around, special orthopedic Halloween masks
would have to be made to fit his face.
The only thing he would ever excel at would be detecting peripheral
scents.
Skippy, however, didn’t seem to care. He was a happy and well-adjusted child. Until he was old enough to understand any of
this, his parents had every mirror in the house removed. At Christmas they had a special Mr. Potato
Head made to match what Skippy looked like.
They were fun times.
Skippy’s doctors eventually figured out that it was a very
rare disease that had caused the problem, and by the time Skip had finished
college he had decided to take a job working at the scenter for disease control. (Not to be confused with the Center for Disease
Control)
